An explanation...

I am going to try and explain my previous post about cheating because some of you did not understand it and had some questions.

These were not young children. They were high school kids.  They were to write an essay and some did it through hard work and reading about the subject then writing in their own words about it.  Several did not. They just went to the Internet and copied the words off the net. No original words of their own.  When I wrote them in high school we used books but were not to copy.  She wanted our original words just as this teacher did.

She used a program called turnitin and was able to catch the cheaters and then she failed them.  My bil is a teacher and he uses it to catch cheaters and our school system has it in their system.  This page will explain how they catch the kids cheating if they use the Internet to do it. http://turnitin.com/static/index.html   It will give you a demo to show how it is done.

No matter how you slice it, plagiarism is wrong.  I think the teacher did do the right thing.  It is so prevalent now and that is sad....Good kids are working hard to get good grades and those others should work for their grades too.

OH, she had no problem with them using the internet but she did have a problem with them copying their work word for word from the net.

I hope  this explains it to you all much better.

  1. If they just copied rather than borrowing heavily, they knew better and should face the consequences. It's probably the amount of borrowing and how to deal with it that I wrestled with back then.

  2. O.K. I get it now! The teacher did exactly the right thing. Teens must be monitored very closely in ALL aspects of their school and personal life. This is the age that they are learning all of the things that they can get away with. It is up to us, as parents to sway them to do what is right.
Thanks for explaining this further Garnet!

  3. One of the reasons that they copied their info in the first place is probably because as younger children, they cheated as well and never learned how to write a paper on their own in the first place. This makes me stand by my comment on your original post. What will these kids be like down the road when they are in the working world? Will they be able to advance their careers when they've cheated most of their life? It's going to catch up to them somewhere along the line. It's sad but if teachers can catch them it might not be too late for them to learn what to do. Thanks Garnet for feeling passionate about this enough to clarify it for others.

  4. Plagiarism is most definitely wrong! OK - that's very different than just using the internet as a resource. The school board should have backed up the teacher. There is no way that they should have gotten away with plagiarism.

  5. Yep I still stand by my comment that it was very wrong of the school not to back up the teacher and a disservice was done to these kids not getting to have a consequence for their actions. I am absolutely sure they knew exactly what they were doing. Sad.

Hope you and yours have a marvelous Monday!

  6. Had to go back and read a bit as I have been away. I think the teacher is so right in this case, these children have to learn that what they did was wrong. The Internet is a tool to help all of us, not to be copied word for word.....the kids will learn nothing if not taught how wrong it is to claim other people's work as their own ...........:-) Hugs

  7. I should have done a better job of explaining but sometimes the words just do not come out right when I am trying to post things. I know what I mean to say but.......*s*
